Mulank and Bhagyank explained

In Indian (Vedic-influenced) numerology two numbers are calculated from your date of birth. The Mulank, also called the psychic or root number, comes from the day you were born only. You add the digits of the day until a single digit remains: someone born on the 24th has 2 + 4 = 6, so their Mulank is 6. The Bhagyank, also called the destiny or life path number, uses the full date: day, month and year. For 24-08-1995 you add 2+4+0+8+1+9+9+5 = 38, then 3+8 = 11, then 1+1 = 2. The Mulank is traditionally said to describe how you see yourself and your daily personality, while the Bhagyank is said to describe the broader direction of your life.

How to calculate your Mulank (step by step)

  1. Take only your birth day (1–31).
  2. If it has two digits, add them.
  3. If the result is still two digits, add again. Examples: 7 → 7, 16 → 7, 29 → 11 → 2, 31 → 4.

How to calculate your Bhagyank

  1. Write the full date as digits: DD MM YYYY.
  2. Add all the digits together.
  3. Keep reducing until one digit remains.

Some Western numerologists keep 11, 22 and 33 as "master numbers" instead of reducing them. This tool follows the common Indian practice of reducing to a single digit.

Lucky numbers, days and colours

Traditional numerology links each Mulank with friendly dates (the dates that reduce to the same number), a weekday ruled by the same planet and associated colours. The calculator shows these for your Mulank. Many people use them light-heartedly for choosing a date for a new start or a phone number ending.

A note on accuracy

Numerology is a traditional belief system, not a science, and there is no scientific evidence that birth numbers determine personality or events. Enjoy the results as a fun tool for reflection, and don't make medical, financial or legal decisions based on them.

Worked examples

Born 7 March 1990: Mulank = 7 (Ketu). Bhagyank = 0+7+0+3+1+9+9+0 = 29 → 2+9 = 11 → 1+1 = 2 (Moon). Born 31 December 2001: Mulank = 3+1 = 4 (Rahu). Bhagyank = 3+1+1+2+2+0+0+1 = 10 → 1 (Sun). Born 18 June 1985: Mulank = 1+8 = 9 (Mars). Bhagyank = 1+8+0+6+1+9+8+5 = 38 → 11 → 2. You can check each of these with the calculator above.

Compatibility between numbers

Traditional numerology groups numbers by planetary friendship. 1, 2, 3 and 9 (Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Mars) are often described as a friendly group; 5 and 6 (Mercury and Venus) are considered mutually friendly; and 4 and 8 (Rahu and Saturn) are said to share a karmic, hardworking nature. Some practitioners call the pairing of 1 and 8 difficult because the Sun and Saturn are seen as opposed. These relationships are used for partnerships, business names and dates, but different numerology schools disagree on the details.

Name number (Chaldean method)

Besides the birth numbers, many Indian numerologists also calculate a name number using the Chaldean system, where letters are assigned values from 1 to 8 (for example A, I, J, Q, Y = 1 and B, K, R = 2). The total of your name is reduced to a single digit, and people sometimes change the spelling of a name so that it "matches" the Mulank or Bhagyank. This tool focuses on birth numbers, which do not depend on spelling.

How people use their numbers

Whatever you choose, treat the result as a conversation starter rather than a rule.

Common calculation mistakes

The most frequent errors are using the month instead of the day for the Mulank, forgetting the zeros in a date (they add nothing, so they are harmless), and stopping at a two-digit total such as 11 or 29 instead of reducing it again. The calculator handles all of this automatically.
